What is MES (Methyl Ester Sulfonate)?

Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) is an anionic surfactant manufactured by sulfonating methyl esters derived from palm or palm-kernel oil, followed by neutralisation and bleaching to produce a stable, light-coloured paste or powder.

How it's made

Renewable methyl esters are reacted with sulfur trioxide (SO₃) in a falling-film sulfonation process, then neutralised with sodium hydroxide to form the final MES salt.

Why it's considered more sustainable

Because its feedstock is renewable (rather than petrochemical), and because it is readily biodegradable, MES is widely regarded as a more environmentally responsible surfactant choice compared to alternatives like LABSA.

Where it's used

MES is used in laundry powders and bars, liquid detergents, dishwashing liquids and industrial cleaning formulations, anywhere strong detergency and good hard-water tolerance are required.
