Difference Between MES and LABSA

MES and LABSA are both anionic surfactants used widely in detergent manufacturing, but they differ meaningfully in feedstock, performance and environmental profile.

Feedstock

MES is derived from renewable palm/palm-kernel methyl esters. LABSA is derived from petrochemical linear alkylbenzene.

Hard water performance

MES maintains stronger detergency and foam in hard water; LABSA's performance drops more noticeably as water hardness increases.

Biodegradability

MES is readily biodegradable. LABSA biodegrades but generally at a slower rate.

Cost and availability

Both are produced at industrial scale and are broadly cost-competitive, though pricing can shift with palm oil vs. crude oil market dynamics respectively.

Many formulators use a blend of both to balance cost, performance and sustainability goals.
